Review: The Science of Sperm - Channel 4
I am a great believer in peer review, and I'm really pleased that we have published the scientific treatment for The Great Sperm Race on Channel 4. We commissioned this as part of the development process in the run-up to our decision to part-fund the programme. It enabled us to canvass scientific opinions on the scientific content separate from the conceptual treatment. We've included the reviewers' comments as part of the document and I hope this will give a clear insight into the process.

The Tree of Life is growing
Since launching the website, we've had over 30,000 unique visitors, and our video has been viewed over 55,000 times. And now, our Tree of Life is growing:
Interactive Tree of Life – UPDATED
Now, you can study the interactive tree as you watch the associated video, swapping between the two as often as you like. And now there’s information, provided by Open University, on all the creatures in the animation. Go to the interactive.
Remixable versions of the Tree of Life video animation – NEW
This new version of the video is available to download, remix and share under Creative Commons licence BY-NC-SA 2.0 UK. Add a voiceover or different music and share your version of the Tree of Life. The videos are available in standard and high definitions. Check out the different videos.
There's still more to come in the next couple of months:
Teaching resources – such as worksheets for students and lesson ideas for teachers – will be available on the website in spring.
More source files will be added to the website too. Take your pick of Photoshop, Maya and .jpg files depicting key moments in the animation. You will be able to use these to build your own presentations, graphics, animations and even construct your own interactive tree.

Licensing and creative commons
How would you like your tree?
We're already having some questions on the blog about licensing for the graphic and associated assets. In short it's all available under some form of creative commons license, in one of two flavours:
The content currently up is all available under the license Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivative Works 2.0 UK: England & Wales (BY-NC-ND) which basically means you can use it but you can't make money off it and you can't mess with it (oh and please reference the site). If you're a teacher, work in a museum or are just an ordinary bod you can show it where you please.
Almost all of the ingredients will soon be available under (BY-NC-SA) which will allow remixes and so on. By ingredients we mean the animation *without* the voiceover and music and presenter. Also all of the images and animations that make it up and even the code that we used to generate it. You'll also be able to make and share your own trees. More on all of this later.

Tree of Life is live
The full six-minute video is now on the Tree of Life website. Don't forget to explore the interactive and sign up for updates.
Plants
We've already had some feedback about the lack of plants in the interactive tree. The key point is that what we've put up for now is pretty much the interactive version of the film. We used the same tools and data structures to build both. Obviously the film has its own narrative structure and logic, but the choice of species might make less sense when on its own in the interactive. This is the situation at launch but it will not be the case in the future.
We'll be posting here more fully about the history and future of the tree, and in particular I'll be blogging more extensively about mechanisms for updating and sharing soon.

Tree of Life trailer
Have a look at the Tree of Life trailer - it's a one-minute version of the video, which will be aired on Sunday 1 February at 21:00 on BBC one.
After transmission, the video will be on our website www.wellcometreeoflife.org, along with the Tree of Life interactive version, which you can explore on your own.
