We've already had some feedback about the lack of plants in the interactive tree. The key point is that what we've put up for now is pretty much the interactive version of the film. We used the same tools and data structures to build both. Obviously the film has its own narrative structure and logic, but the choice of species might make less sense when on its own in the interactive. This is the situation at launch but it will not be the case in the future.
We'll be posting here more fully about the history and future of the tree, and in particular I'll be blogging more extensively about mechanisms for updating and sharing soon.

Dear Dan:
ReplyDeletehere are a few suggestions of a minimal complication change, that I guess would make everybody happy (sure you can get better and more detailed than this, but consider it my 5 cents):
3.5 mMy- photosynthetic bacteria (cyanobacteria)- without them there would be no oxygen on earth
2.9 mMy- Archeae
1.6 mMy- eukaryotic cells
1.5 mMy- multicellular organisms
820 My- sponges + FUNGI
620 My- ALGAE
420 My- Vascular plants
390 My- Terrestrial vascular plants
315 My- CONIPHERS (Gymnosperms)
162 My- FLOWERING PLANTS (Angiosperms)
sure enough, any of these could then branch out as many times as you have for animals, but I guess everyone is prepared to accept that animals were the proof-of-principle of the concept, and hence are more detailes. But at least the ones on capitals MUST be there, they represent the major kingdoms of living species today, and I'm sure could be easily inserted in the official version on the net and elsewhere as single branchs extending up until today..
my five cents, feel free to use (or not) ad-lib. thanks much
Jose
Just wanted to say that I read your blog quite frequently and I'm always amazed at some of the stuff people post here. But keep up the good work, it's always interesting.
